Tacoma pastor stabbed during church event

A Tacoma pastor is in serious condition after being stabbed by a church member Tuesday night.

Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the stabbing happened at about 8:30 p.m. during a church event at the Slavic Christian Center.

Fulghum said a man at the event asked to speak with the pastor. The two men went to the pastor's office, where the conversation turned into a confrontation that ended when the man stabbed the pastor in the back.

The attacker ran from the church and has yet to be apprehended, according to Fulghum.

Pasor Peter Sayenko, was transported to a local hospital with with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Fulghum said Wednesday that police have arrested a man for investigation of first-degree assault.

The spokesman says the man had been receiving marital counseling from Sayenko and showed up at the church demanding to talk to the pastor.
Bail set at $500,000 for man accused of stabbing Tacoma pastor

A man suspected of stabbing his pastor at their Tacoma church was ordered jailed Thursday in lieu of $500,000 bail while Pierce County prosecutors decided what charges he should face.

Ivan Zaytsev is scheduled for arraignment Monday in Superior Court.

Tacoma police said Zaytsev attacked the Rev. Peter Sayenko of the Slavic Christian Center on Tuesday night as the men talked in the pastor’s church office.

Deputy prosecutor Patrick Cooper said Thursday that Sayenko was punched in the face, then stabbed in the back with a sharp implement. The pastor is recovering.

Zaytsev, who reportedly had been receiving marriage counseling from Sayenko, allegedly showed up at the church and demanded to speak to the pastor. Sayenko interrupted a service he was presiding over to talk to Zaytsev, police said.

Police arrested Zaytsev on Wednesday and booked him into jail for investigation of first-degree assault.

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a man with assault after he allegedly stabbed his pastor last week during a confrontation at their Tacoma church.

Prosecutors charged Ivan Zaytsev on Monday with first-degree assault. He pleaded not guilty at this arraignment this afternoon and was ordered held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Tacoma police said Zaytsev attacked the Rev. Peter Sayenko of the Slavic Christian Center on Tuesday night as the men talked in the pastor’s church office.

Sayenko was punched in the face, then stabbed in the back with a sharp implement, police said. He was treated at the hospital, then released later that night.
